Goffena, Russell repeat as winners
The hills on the Hashawha 2.85M course are like the H's in its name, there are more than many remember. Still we were treated to an evening with reasonable heat and humidity, and a course in good shape with just a few mud patches to navigate. The difficulty of the course always surprises some who usually wouldn't have taken a walk break during a race. All 106 competitors who began completed the challenging route.
Taylor Russell showed his versatility by winning on an undulating, uneven surface a week after dominating on the track. His winning margin was less this week as series newcomer Ed Schlichter had him in sight. Steve Moore took time off from Run Moore to join us with a strong, third-place showing. Chris Karabaich was fourth, relegating our first teenager, Tad Didio, to fifth place.
Rubie Goffena ran away from the women's field in another Twilight Series event, showing her strength on hilly terrain a week after doing the same on a flat track. Rebecca Debinski lost sight of Rubie, but she also moved out of the vision of the other women to finish well in second. Erin McGrath, Taylor Karabaich and Brady Crone fought to the finish to complete the top five.
Other notable finishers include Skip Fennell, not satisfied with his recent honorary doctorate from McDaniel, came out and won his age group. Jeanette Novak, age 74, having now run more races in 2018 than her age, notched another age-group win. Outkicking her dad was our youngest racer, 9 year-old Hope Faris.
The course was once again expertly-marked by race director Gary Honeman with the assistance of Frank Schaeffer. Liuda Galinaitis did registration and provided the all-important Popsicles. Joe Loveland is our equipment dude. Jim Bullock course marshaled and provided a running escort to some of our finishers. Tim Gosnell did the timing. Jen Goffena and Genice Rill worked the finish line.
